MUSIC MAGAZINES: MEDIA LANGUAGE

Look carefully at the front covers of MOJO and RNR magazines.

QUESTION: How far do MOJO and RNR use different media language to create different connotations(CONNOTATION meaning: an idea or quality that a word makes you think about in addition to its meaning.)

Answer on your blog. This is a high-value question and should take all lesson to answer. You can use the class blog search engine for more examples of how to analyse music magazines.

In your answer you should have 2 paragraphs:

  • analyse the media language in MOJO and RNR magazine. 'Media language' includes the placement of the main image, the type of photography, lighting, colours, fonts, how busy or restrained the cover is, the layout (such as alignment to the margins), how serious or playful
  • make judgements and draw conclusions about how far the media language is used differently in both extracts to create different connotations. Are there similarities in both covers? What sorts of audiences are they targeting? You could think about MOJO's rock aesthetic of living loud and dangerously compared to RNR's folk, rock, blues vibe.
  • The juxtaposition of red and blue on the Foo Fighters cover creates a more vibrant and expressive character. Furthermore, words like "adventures" and "war" portray them as more brave and determined than the. Furthermore, the serif font, combined with the more'adventurous' language, implies that they have struggled - 'we've been to...we've been to...' emphasises this, demonstrating that they are both experienced and unshaped by their'struggles,' presenting a different but still respectable figure than the RnRcover.
  • One of the publications is busier than the other. Because of its numerous cover lines, graphics, and a highly dynamic neon cover mount with a colourful cartoon picture, as well as a very dynamic neon cover mount. RnR also has a lot of cover lines, although they're all justified to the right-hand margin. They are completely white, which gives them a calm, organised, and uncluttered aspect. The cover mount, on the other hand, has no visual movement and is fairly basic and streamlined.
  • The colour of OJO is bold, active, and vivacious, particularly in the primary colours of the cover mount, which includes a funny skeleton. RnR, on the other hand, opts for mellow, muted browns with just red as a pop of colour. Despite adhering to genre rules, both publications showcase a celebrity at the centre of aesthetic appeal, and both magazines honour that figure. MOJO does this in an unusual way.
  • OJO's colour is bright, lively, and vivacious, especially in the primary colours of the cover mount, which contains a humorous skeleton. RnR, on the other hand, prefers calm, subdued browns with a burst of red. Despite conforming to genre criteria, both publications place a celebrity at the centre of visual appeal, and both magazines pay tribute to that individual. MOJO does this in an innovative manner.

MOJO COVER DESCRIPITON

This is a Neil Young poster that honours him by placing him at the centre of the image, giving him prominence. Because of his little smile, he is meant to seem kind, caring, and lovely, but not too wild. Because of his long hair, he is made to look hippie and alternative, as long hair is uncommon in guys. The beautiful golden hour sunshine adds to this, emphasising his laid-back demeanour and the casual nature of his music and attitude. Because he is in the precise centre of the screen, the musician is made to look significant, calling our attention to him immediately away and displaying his confidence and pride. There are also beautiful sky in the backdrop which makes the whole scene look much calmer and more peasfull.

There's also blue sky in the backdrop, hinting that he's a cheerful person listening to exciting music. The red/orange lighting on Neil's face is visually appealing since it compliments the red fonts used throughout the magazine. Here's another photograph of an elderly man with a grey beard. Because to the choice of drab colours like grey, black, and brown, as well as the basic lighting and darkening of half of his face, he seems average and unattractive.

The cover is fairly crowded, with a lot of 'right in your face' information. Neil Young is printed in capital letters, emphasising that he is an important part of this publication. The sentences are well-organized and to the side; none of them hide his face; rather, they go behind him, emphasising his significance. Most music magazines have around the same amount of cover lines as this one, although not all of them are as well-organized. "You go with it when the music calls," he explains, exhibiting his calm demeanour and readiness to go with the flow.

"In his own field, from harvest to barn" Because it is a harvest pun, this suggests that the magazine has some comedy. "field of his own" implies that he may be unorthodox, having his own musical style and genre. Because the lighting is yellowish, the main colours are yellow and black, and the typeface is yellow and red to suit the lighting. The accent colours are orange and black since there isn't much of it but enough to catch the eye. This has a cover mount, which is unusual for mojo.

CUFFS: REAL LIFE

How far does the extract try to create a scene that is portraying real life.

The extract attempts to place the police officers in 'real life' with everyday people in order to make them appear normal and a part of society. This is seen in the locations used. The police officers are seen in a cafĂ©, in a town centre and on the motorway. All of these locations are seen in everyday life and people go to them or visit them. seeing the police here and not away from the public makes them appear included and part of everyday life and society.

During the chase sequence, a bird's eye view tracking shot displays the many cars, roads and roundabouts in the area of the chase sequence. This is effective at making us feel as if we are watching 'real life' as all the locations are recognisable as real, helping us to draw connections, as we would in real life, with where we may have been and what we may have seen.

However, the extract is unable to fully show real life as it is unable to break certain rules of television. Many things are affected by these rules. For example, due to being broadcast pre-watershed, swearing
or adult references are removed and cannot be shown as younger audiences are not supposed to be exposed to swearing or adult references.
